What she (Granholm) said: "(Gov. Jennifer Granholm) had a lot of case studies that will probably help out people who are new to the candidates."

What he (DeVos) said: "I felt (Dick DeVos) just stuck to what his commercials say."

What they didn't say: "I'd like to see them talk about this Single Business Tax. My parents are both small-business owners. I'd like to see how they will replace this tax. None of them talked about the environment once."

Bill Donohue

Communication professor

Mostly Democratic

Voting for: Undecided

What she said: "The governor's strategy was to pin DeVos on the specifics and what he would do."

What he said: "Right or wrong, for what (DeVos) is trying to accomplish, he came off as trying to avoid some specifics."

What they didn't say: "There are a number of problems with education that I would like to see addressed — a much more comprehensive discussion of education. That probably bores people."

Dennis Bentley

Political science junior

MSU College Republicans

Conservative

Voting for: DeVos

What she said: "DeVos was talking more about jobs and the economy and Granholm was talking more about politics. The governor has been there in four years and she doesn't know what it takes."

What he said: "To get the economy to turn around, you want someone in there who knows about it. (DeVos) knows what it takes."

What they didn't say: "(The candidates) did not talk enough about Michigan."

Ross Emmett

James Madison associate professor

Moderate

Voting for: Undecided

What she said: "(Granholm's) attention was 'Hey listen, I know the state and let's look at the specific issues and look at the solutions.'"

What he said: "(DeVos) was willing to entertain specific issues, but he almost turned away from the issues and toward leadership."

What they didn't say: "(The candidates) should have talked about a growing economy."

Matt Moss

Telecommunication, information studies and media sophomore

Democrat

Voting for: Granholm

What she said: "She was a little more concise and delivered her information a little better than DeVos."

What he said: "He can put on a nice little game or show, but there are so many things he's hiding, like the truth, that voters don't know about it."

What they didn't say: "(DeVos) just kind of has this personality that he doesn't seem personable at all."

Bryan Ritchie

James Madison associate professor

Moderate

Voting for: Undecided

What she said: "I'm tired of Granholm talking about economic issues she knows nothing about. We never talk about what kind of jobs (we need to create)."

What he said: "I was disappointed with the fact that DeVos was not honest. Maybe there's no way to get elected with honesty."

What they didn't say: "Maybe the political system is broken, and these people are stuck in it."

Chandra Allard

Political science and pre-law sophomore

MSU College Democrats

Democrat

Voting for: Granholm

What she said: "I've read through both of them, and there is a clearly stronger plan implemented by the governor."

What he said: "I just don't understand how a billionaire is going to relate to the average Michigan resident."

What they didn't say: "It would be nice to have a whole debate on education."

Charles Ballard

Economics professor

Moderate

Voting for: Undecided

What she said: "The governor says we should replace the Single Business Tax entirely. I don't agree with what she wants to do, but I agree we need to replace it."

What he said: "If I understand DeVos' position, he wants to replace half of it and blow another $1 billion hole in our budget."

What they didn't say: "We have two more debates. I'm sort of hoping they're going to mention (other issues) the next two debates because I sort of think those are important."
