The bartender

June 2, 2006
Lansing Community College sophomore Alexee Cook mixes "Black and blue" at the Peanut Barrel Restaurant and Bar, 521 E. Grand River. The drink is a mix of draft beers, Guinness and Blue Moon.

Blue Moon Belgian White is often served with a slice of orange.

Guinness Draught can be described as "bread in beer form."

You might think these are two great tastes that could not conceivably taste great together. Head to The Peanut Barrel, 521 E. Grand River Ave., and order the Black and Blue, and your mind might change.

A variation on the classic Black and Tan, the oft-requested Black and Blue is a half-pint of Guinness "layered" on top of a half-pint of Blue Moon. The Guinness is poured over the convex side of a metal spoon to prevent splashing and to mix the layers.

The result looks a little like that special layered Jell-O your Great Aunt Mildred might bring to Thanksgiving, with both ends of the beer spectrum brought together in one glass.

Emphasis on glass.

According to bartender Alexee Cook, the layering process doesn't work as well in a plastic cup.

"It's kind of weird," the Lansing Community College surgical technology sophomore said.
