St. Patrick's Day is tomorrow, and what's more festive than throwing back a few green refreshments? But if you're tired of the same old beer in unnatural hues of emerald and clover found at every bar and party in the area Friday, try your hand at this drink.
The color is festive without looking like moldy beer, and when dressed up with margarita salt, lemon and served in a martini glass, it looks downright classy.
So while the ale lovers are guzzling down pints resembling the Chicago River, you can sit back and enjoy a refreshing twist on festively green St. Patty's Day spirits.
FYI: This drink contains alcohol, so you must be 21 or older to legally purchase or consume it.
Supplies:
Martini glass
Shaker
Ice
Watermelon vodka
Margarita mix
Sparkling water or seltzer
Lemon
Blue margarita salt
Directions:
Toss a couple of ice cubes into the shaker and add one or two shots of the watermelon vodka, depending on your own tastes.
Then add about three shots of margarita mix and two shots of seltzer.
Shake it, but not too violently or the whole thing is likely to explode in your face.
Let the mixture calm for a minute while you wet the rim of the martini glass, then dip it into the blue margarita salt.
Then slice the lemon.
Squeeze a bit of the lemon juice into the bottom of the glass for flavor, then add the vodka and margarita mixture.
Fill it high enough so that the salt starts to slide into the drink.
Cost of ingredients:
A fifth of Burnett's Watermelon Vodka costs around $8 and a bottle of Daily's Margarita Mix is about $5.
The lemon is less than $1 and so is the seltzer.
Tastes Like:
A lighter, more citrus-like version of a margarita. The watermelon and lemon flavors are powerful enough to disguise any taste of vodka.
How many until you're tipsy?
One and you'll be in the St. Patrick's Day spirit. Two or three and you'll be doing an Irish jig on tabletops. Four or more and you'll still be seeing green the next morning.
