The State News recently talked with Jesse Young, a 2002 MSU graduate who used to play with his band Pushing 33 around campus and is coming back to the city to play a show.
Young opened up for Jason Mraz at the Union Ballroom a few days after he graduated. Although the band broke up in 2003, Young said he still gets random e-mails from old fans who remember his days with Pushing 33.
Young returns to East Lansing to play on Saturday night at Rick's American Cafe, 224 Abbott Road.
The State News: How did your former band Pushing 33 help you get started in the music business?
Jesse Young: Pushing 33 was definitely the start. That's where I learned a lot about songwriting and performing. It was a stepping stone to be a better songwriter. It was a big learning experience.
SN: Have you toured as a solo artist?
JY: Not in a while. Once I moved down to Florida, I haven't toured as much. I still play whenever I can. That's why I come back and do this. East Lansing is my second home. It brings me back to my time at MSU.
SN: What have you been up to since Pushing 33 broke up?
JY: Pushing 33 broke up in summer of 2003. Since then, I recorded an EP. Two years ago I moved to Florida. I recorded a new EP in Atlanta.
SN: Has your style changed now that you're on your own?
JY: It's a little different. Occasionally I'll do Pushing 33 songs. It's the same style of music. We were pretty much the acoustic rock.
