Good fun, drinks and a viewing of the bizarre cult film "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." It's not exactly a normal bar routine, but it can be with The Temple Club's "Brew and View" night.

Last Tuesday, The Temple Club, 500 E. Grand River Ave. in Lansing, had its first Brew and View - drink specials and two movies - with screenings of "Napoleon Dynamite" and "The Rocky Horror Picture Show."

"The first week we had a great turnout and business picked up until finally we had about a hundred people," Temple Club general manager Jerome White said. "There was no cover charge, and popcorn was free."

White says he got the idea to have a Brew and View night from Detroit-, Grand Rapids- and Chicago-area night spots.

"We basically cloned the idea from other clubs that had success with it, like the Intersection (in Grand Rapids) and the Magic Bag (in Ferndale, Mich.)," White said. "It was a really popular concept in Chicago, so we took their good idea and ran with it."

The idea to show cult movies came an entirely different way. While sitting at home with his wife brainstorming, they came up with the idea of showing "Napoleon Dynamite" and "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" together.

"We started out with them because they're two of the biggest cult classics that border on commercialism, which for us means we appeal to a broad audience," he said.

A lot of participants enjoyed themselves.

"We had a lot of people that were acting things out and people knew the lines," White said. "The crowd participation was great."

Those at the club were excited about the event.

"If I'm going to be at watching a movie, I'm probably going to have a beer, so why not come out and chat with people?" MSU alumnus Jeremy Whitwam said.

His wife, history senior Kristin Whitwam, agreed.

"For me, it's an extension of our living room," she said. "You can have more people, and it's an informal version of a movie theater."

"Napoleon Dynamite" and "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" weren't the only films on in the club. On the first floor, The Temple Club was showing silent films.

"The idea was actually brought to me by a local DJ that wanted to piggy back off of our movie night," White said. "While we played our silent films, he softly mixed music that he felt described the picture he saw on screen."

The next Brew and View will begin at 9 p.m. Tuesday. Director Wes Anderson's "The Royal Tenenbaums" and "The Life Aquatic" will be shown.
