Meridian Township - Police and firefighters responded to an apartment fire shortly after 10 p.m. Thursday night at College Park apartments on Grand River Avenue just east of Hagadorn Road.

Meridian Township police Sgt. Don Lound said an argument broke out between two male apartment residents, one of whom is an MSU student.

The nonstudent resident told The State News that the student, a psychology senior, was drinking heavily and threatened to burn down the building. The nonstudent resident said he looked in the window of the apartment and saw fire. He then said he extinguished the flames using a shirt.

The MSU student was taken into custody at the scene.

"It was fortunate that one of the owners was able to put out the fire and nobody was seriously injured," Lound said.

At 10:30 p.m., a fire truck and several police units still were on the scene. Lound said damage was minimal, mostly coming from smoke.

Not all of the apartments were evacuated - several residents were peeking out of windows - and a small section of the parking lot was cordoned off.
