East Lansing police arrested two men who apparently attacked a man and broke into a car in East Lansing neighborhoods late Tuesday.
The latest episodes are the fourth and fifth in a string of aggressive robbery attempts in East Lansing in the past three days. Police don't believe the men arrested Tuesday committed the other robberies, which occurred at gunpoint.
Late Sunday, two female students were separately approached by armed men demanding their belongings. On Tuesday morning, three students were tied up at gunpoint as three men ransacked their East Lansing apartment.
"We are going to keep patrolling the neighborhoods and reminding everyone to lock their houses and cars and keep the lights on," East Lansing police Capt. Juli Liebler said. Police do not have suspects in the earlier robberies.
The men arrested Tuesday night were identified as a 14-year-old and 23-year-old, both from Lansing. Their names were not released.
The suspects apparently accosted a 53-year-old East Lansing resident on the 700 block of Grove Street at about 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Liebler said.
The suspects asked for directions to Lansing and began walking away before turning back and ambushing the victim, Liebler said.
"They pushed him down and assaulted him," Liebler said. "He got up and chased them."
About 30 minutes later, a 22-year-old male student noticed the 23-year-old suspect in his roommate's car on the 300 block of Division Street. Liebler said the student yelled at the suspect, who ran away with a wallet, cell phone and watch.
Police stopped both suspects on M.A.C. Avenue in a 1992 Cutlass. The victims later identified their assailants.
Professional accounting graduate student Cliff Bracey said he watched officers arrest the suspects from his front porch on Linden Street.
"Its definitely not good for the community," Bracey said. "It just makes me angry."
The recent rash of robberies has forced Bracey to become more cautious.
