Students arraigned in riots, anti-war protests

April 18, 2003

City officials decided they have enough evidence against three students who have been charged with involvement in the March 28-30 disturbances to move their cases for jury selection next month.

The students, the first to appear for a pretrial, were in 54-B District Court Thursday for their pretrials and East Lansing Assistant City Attorney Molly Clark said although the students were hoping for an offer to lower possible repercussions, none were granted.

"We're taking these very seriously," Clark said.

Clark said jury selection for the three students will take place in mid-May and that more pretrials will take place next Thursday.

Also on Thursday, 12 out of 14 war protesters arrested March 21 in East Lansing entered court for pretrial, Clark said.

Nine of the protesters pled guilty to charges, including disobeying a police officer or obstruction of justice. They will be placed in a program where if after six months they aren't charged and convicted of any criminal offense, their case will be dismissed. However, Clark said each person who pled guilty will have to pay $731 to cover overtime costs the East Lansing Police Department paid for extra officers.

Clark said she expects the other three protesters to plead guilty.
