Hubbard holds hallwide meningitis meeting

January 26, 2003

A hallwide meeting in Hubbard Hall was held Friday night to discuss what happened to a female resident who had contracted meningoccocemia, a disease similar to bacterial meningitis.

About 200 students packed a classroom to listen to Olin Health Center representatives discuss the prevention and consequences of meningitis. However, students were more surprised to learn that meningitis vaccines do not protect against meningoccocemia.

Haslett resident Pat Bezdek, whose daughter lives on the same floor as the student who fell ill, attended the meeting after learning about it from watching a news broadcast earlier.

"I'm not as worried as I was earlier," she said. "I'm thankful for the meeting. But for the parents that live far away, it could have been handled differently."
