Smoker suspended indefinitely from team

October 24, 2002

MSU junior quarterback Jeff Smoker has been suspended and will not play in Saturday’s game against Wisconsin.

In a written statement issued Thursday night, MSU football head coach Bobby Williams said: “Jeff Smoker has been suspended indefinitely for violating team rules. The decision was made after consulting with Jeff and others. It is for the welfare of both Jeff and this football program that this action is taken immediately.”

Smoker has thrown for 13 touchdowns and 1,593 passing yards through seven games this season.

University and athletics department officials declined further comment.

Smoker is expected to be replaced in Saturday’s game by sophomore quarterback Damon Dowdell, who has played in four games this season, passing for 108 yards and two touchdowns.
