Scholarship could aid low-income families

September 4, 2002

Democratic gubernatorial candidate Jennifer Granholm unveiled a scholarship program she’ll try to implement if elected governor.

Granholm, the state’s attorney general running against Lt. Gov. Dick Posthumus to become Michigan’s 47th governor, said the Great Lakes Scholars program would help students coming from families who have incomes less than $60,000 a year.

“More than half the families in our state would be eligible for this program under the income guidelines,” Granholm said in a statement.

“Our goal is to expand access to higher education for the children of moderate- and low-income families, to give them a shot at lifelong success, and increase opportunity for all children.”

Granholm said she wants to finance 4,500 scholarships for Michigan students by the end of her first term as governor.

The award would be a one-time, nonrenewable scholarship of up to $2,000 to attend any qualified post-secondary institution located in Michigan approved by the Great Lakes Scholars program.
