Hyperbole makes familiar punk music

September 26, 2002

The Lansing locals of Hyperbole never leave you guessing who their musical influences are.

This five-piece band has produced a decent album filled with tunes closely resembling its idols Blink-182, A New Found Glory and Saves The Day.

This band could easily be labeled as a cheap knockoff, but instead, has enough merit to make it stand on its own - and turn a few heads in the process.

None of the members have passed the ripe age of 18, making Hyperbole one of the more talented group of youngsters to hit the local music scene.

Its album “Boy Meets Wonder,” named after two of the band’s favorite television shows, has 13 tracks of the addictive tried-and-true formula of pop punk.

The churning tight energy of “We’re Spent” will immediately draw you in with the same attitude and guitar tutelage that made Blink-182 a household name.

Andrew Ash keeps the beats fresh with his bombardment on the skins and could easily be mistaken for Travis Barker, Blink-182’s drummer.

Singer Landon Sheely shies away from humor, however, and focuses more on spiritual lyrical content, giving Hyperbole a personality of its own.

In the rip-roaring guitar hooks of “Waking Up,” Sheely sings, “I’ve got this peace from you/That always seems to get me through/Lord use me/In any way you can.”

The dynamic “Something Wrong” has the hooks and sonic wallop to thrust Hyperbole into bigger and better things. Also impressive are the pounding “I Wonder,” the anthemic “My Best for You,” and the guitar fury of the melodious “Stank Free Soup.”

Hyperbole has the Hurley apparel, the youthful energy and the spiritual melodies to push it forward as the local band not to miss live - but you might mistake them for Blink-182. Did I say that already? Well, it’s true.
