Land-share proposal approved by council

July 24, 2002

East Lansing City Council unanimously approved a new draft of a land-share deal with Meridian Township on Tuesday.

The 100-year deal, known as a Public Act 425 agreement, allows both municipalities to share taxes and the city will provide municipal services.

“I think we very reasonably approached this,” Mayor Mark Meadows said. “I am very glad we reached an agreement - assuming they pass it.”

One change included the city agree on the township’s 50-foot setback ordinance, which states buildings cannot be constructed less than 50 feet from wetlands.

The township agreed to let residents in the area to determine which community they would live in after 100 years.

The two properties include a parcel near the East Lansing Family Aquatic Center, 6400 Abbott Road, and an 11-acre plot near Four Winds Golf Course, 5800 Park Lane Road.

The municipalities have been negotiating since February and if a deal is not reached the fate of the property will be up for annexation in a vote Aug. 6.

The Meridian Township Board of Trustees will meet Friday to discuss the new proposal. If the board approves the draft, the results of the annexation vote will become meaningless.
