Richardson shows air

The former Spartan was named MVP of The ‘got milk?’ Rookie Challenge, scoring 26 points on 11-of-18 shooting, including a 3-of-5 from three-point range. Richardson’s efforts helped lead the first-year players to a 103-97 win over the NBA sophomores.

Richardson also won the NBA.com Slam Dunk contest presented by Real One. He defeated Seattle’s Desmond Mason in the first round by a score of 98-84.

In the finals Richardson defeated Sacramento’s Gerald Wallace, 85-80.

Men take invitational

The men’s swimming and diving team (8-4 overall, 1-3 Big Ten) won the Circle of Stars Invitational on Friday night.

The Spartans scored 193.375 points to defeat second-place Ball State, which had 193.300. Eastern Michigan placed third with 192.325, followed by Ohio State, which totaled 190.450 points.

The team will compete against Rutgers at 7 p.m. Saturday in Jenison Field House.

Tennis blanks Illinois

The women’s tennis team defeated Illinois-Chicago 7-0 Sunday at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility.

The team beat Illinois-Chicago in singles competition and took two of three doubles matches to improve its record to 4-2 on the season.

MSU returns to action Saturday, traveling to Miami (Ohio). The Spartans also play Sunday at Ball State. Both matches begin at 1 p.m.

Season closes in loss

The men’s swimming and diving team completed its regular season with a loss against the Wolverines on Saturday.

The Spartans fell 137-99. The Spartans strongest event was the 200-yard breaststroke, where the team took first, second and third-place.

The team’s next competition will be the 2002 Big Ten Championships on Feb. 28 through Mar. 2. in Bloomington,Ind.

‘U’ comes up short

The men’s and women’s track and field teams competed at the Nittany Lion Challenge Cup hosted by Penn State in University Park, Pa., Saturday.

The men’s team placed 10th at the cup, while the women finished 12th.

The meet left a number of Spartans provisionally qualified in respective events at the Horace Ashenfelter III Indoor Track.

The Spartans will compete in the Big Ten Championships Feb. 23-24 in Minneapolis.
