Restaurant changes ownership

January 17, 2002

An old East Lansing restaurant is being sold for the second time in three years.

Jerry Norris, Jacquie Norris and Robert Smith, owners of Hobie’s Restaurants, 930 Trowbridge Road, have reached an agreement with Dave Baker, a Holt resident, to sell the 34-year-old restaurant.

Baker has worked in restaurants for years but this is his first time owning one.

“I wanted to be in the restaurant business,” he said. “The restaurant came available so I bought it.”

Baker attended culinary school in New Haven, Conn., in 1969 and hopes to use his knowledge to improve the restaurant’s menu.

He plans to focus on the food selection but said an increase in promotions could follow.

The store has already begun an association with the ROTC, providing 6-foot subs for the group.

“I want to get (the store) stabilized first, then I’ll go worry about promotions,” he said.

Other than the owner change, the staff will remain the same, with four new faces.

The new and former owners have already reached an agreement on the sale, but the transaction will not become official until issues transferring the beer and wine license can be sorted out.
