Swimmers stay strong at Miami

The MSU men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams held high positions among the 18-team competition in this weekend’s Miami Invitational in Oxford, Ohio.

Going into Sunday’s finals, the women led the competition with a 4.5 point lead over Miami while the men held second place with a 51-point margin between it and first place Kenyon.

For the women, senior Ildiko Szekely earned first place in the 100-yard butterfly with a pool record time of 55.50. Junior Katie Duncombe earned the second first place for the women with a time of 55.88 in the 100-yard backstroke.

The women’s 200-yard medley relay team, consisting of junior Deb O’Neil and freshmen Jana Richardson and Jen Windstein finished second.

First and second place in the 3-meter dive went to senior Carly Weiden and junior Stephanie Anisko, respectively.

The men earned third place in the 800-yard freestyle relay with a team of senior Scott Shafer, junior Joe Brennan and freshmen Joseph Obringer and Peter Politi.

Third place also went to junior Nick Visscher in the 3-meter dive.

Both the men and the women finished the invitational Sunday.
