Two former MSU men’s golfers qualify for U.S. Open

Two former MSU men’s golfers Matt Harmon and Randall Hutchison qualified for the 2013 U.S. Open at the Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pa., taking place June 13-16. Harmon and Hutchison were among eight golfers who qualified at the sectional qualifying site Monday in Woodmont Country Club in Rockville, Md.

MSU places 2nd in golf tournament

The MSU women’s golf team started the 2012 campaign off on the right foot with a strong showing of second place in the Mary Fossum Invitational this past weekend. MSU hosted the event (named after longtime great MSU women’s golf coach Mary Fossum) for the 29th time.

Men's golf kicks off this weekend on the road

The MSU men’s golf team gets their season underway this weekend when they travel to Sugar Grove, Ill., to take on Indiana and Purdue in the Northern Intercollegiate on Saturday and Sunday. The Spartans then go to Zionsville, Ind., on Sept. 15-16, to compete in the Wolf Run Intercollegiate along with Illinois and Wisconsin.

Face Time with Caroline Powers

One of the more under-the-radar Spartan athletes in 2011-12 was also one of the most successful. Junior golfer Caroline Powers has amassed an exemplary career in three years in East Lansing, even being called “one of the best athletes at Michigan State,” by her coach Stacy Slobodnik-Stoll.

Golfers honored by coaches

Two MSU women’s golfers were honored by the National Golf Coaches Association, or NGCA, this week for their performances in the 2012 season that helped the Spartans win their second consecutive Big Ten championship and earn a berth in the NCAA Championship. Junior Caroline Powers was chosen as an honorable mention All-American for the second time in two years.

Men's and women's golf pick up pair of recruits

MSU men’s and women’s golf each signed two golfers for the 2012-13 season last weekend. Kendall Allen from Shady Side Academy in Pittsburgh, Pa., and Gabby Yurik from Stoney Creek High School in Rochester, Mich., signed with women’s golf, and Sean Friel from Brother Rice High School in Rochester Hills, Mich., and Mitch Rutledge from Whitfield School in St.

Women's golf set to open season

MSU joins a field of Auburn, Coastal Carolina, Florida State, Kentucky, North Texas, Oklahoma, Texas, Texas A&M, Tulane and UT-San Antonio at the “Mo” Morial Invitational, hosted by Texas A&M.
