The State News: What came before your position at the ELPD?
Chad Stemen: I went to MSU for a criminal justice degree then I worked for Ingham County Sheriff’s Office … I did homeland security planning and emergency preparedness, planning for disasters — natural or man-made incidents — and a lot of work with the public safety area, fire EMS and the police sector.

SN: Why did you want to go into criminal justice?
CS: As a kid growing up, I always wanted to be a police officer and it just kind of fell into my path … Also working at the sheriff’s office, I had a lot of good mentors there and they pushed me into the direction that I’m heading right now.

SN: What do you hope to bring to the East Lansing community?
CS: I’m young — I can deal with the student population. I went to (MSU) for four years, so I know what goes on around here and I can bring my assets that I had from Ingham County Sheriff’s Office emergency management to the East Lansing area for their special events with the Final Four in the spring time and football in the fall. I have experience with the area … I’m happy to be here.

Q & A with Batora
The State News: What came before the ELPD?
Dan Batora: I went to college at Ferris State University but I went to their Lansing campus. I actually worked here at the ELPD. I spent two years as a cadet and two years as a parking officer. After I finished college I went to the police academy in Battle Creek … and upon graduating from there, I went to Oak Park (Public Safety Department) where I was a public safety officer for five years.

SN: If you could pick one memory as a police officer that sticks out to you, what would it be?
DB: When I worked at Oak Park we had an officer killed in the line of duty and I was working that night so that’s probably the most prevalent memory. But as far as positive memories … when I got the cadet job, I was in my house in Lansing and getting the call that I got the job and how excited I was and just knowing that was kind of leading toward my future.

SN: Do you plan to stick around East Lansing for a while?
DB: This is where my family’s from. This is where I started my career and where I learned the ropes. To come back here and do this is where I plan to be for the rest of my career. That’s my expectation.
