On Friday, The State News Board of Directors appointed managing editor and English junior Kate Jacobson editor-in-chief and appointed English and advertising junior Colleen Curran interim advertising manager.
One week earlier, Jacobson was given The State News staff recommendation to succeed current editor-in-chief history senior Justin Harris. Jacobson will lead the paper in fall and spring semesters of the 2011-12 academic year.
The paper’s editor-in-chief for the summer semester has yet to be selected.
Jacobson has worked at The State News for six semesters and has interned at the Record-Eagle in Traverse City, Mich.
“I don’t think you ever go into a job like this one thinking, ‘I want to be (editor-in-chief),’” Jacobson said. “As you grow and progress, it’s something you realize you have the ability to do and you would like to help others succeed in a field that you love.”
Curran, who has worked for the advertising department since October 2008, said helping others was an important aspect of the job. Curran also hopes to raise the revenue of the paper in the upcoming semesters.
“(The) main goal is really to improve the department,” Curran said. “The economy has done a lot to us as a paper in general, but I have a lot of plans and goals.”
