Most eligible Mich. bachelor former Spartan

October 10, 2010

Ladies go crazy for Michigan sexy man Jeff Kus. Kus was nominated by his sister Jamie Losch for Cosmo-politan magazine’s 2010 Bachelor of the Year competition, which puts him up against 50 other bachelors across the country for the chance to win $10,000.

Forget showing up late or chewing with your mouth open — one of Jeff Kus’ biggest turnoffs is when women misuse the English language.

“If a girl uses the word ‘literally’ too much in the wrong context or when it doesn’t make sense. It can just be really annoying,” he said.

On the other hand, trustworthy ladies with a good sense of humor are just what Kus is looking for.

“I like a girl that’s a go-getter — a type A personality,” Kus said. “If she laughs at my jokes, that’s a huge bonus because I try to be an entertainer. And she’s got to be trustworthy and genuine, definitely a lady.”

Kus, a 2002 MSU graduate, was chosen by Cosmopolitan magazine as Michigan’s Bachelor of the Year.

He’s now up against the chosen bachelors from the other 49 states and from Washington, D.C. to compete for the magazine’s outright title of Bachelor of the Year.

Voting for the contest ended Sunday and the winner, who will receive a $10,000 grand prize and a $5,000 wardrobe from Express, will be announced Tuesday.

Although he said he knows the fame associated with being in the contest is fleeting, he’s enjoying it while it lasts and appreciating what he has.

“It only happens once in a lifetime,” he said. “I’m flattered to be chosen.”

Jamie Losch, Kus’ sister, entered her brother into the contest months ago.

“My husband and I were shopping with our daughter at Express in Eastwood (Towne Center) and we saw the nomination form and chuckled,” Losch said.

“We thought, ‘He would be a shoe-in,’ so we nominated him. Lo and behold, he was nominated.”

Losch said she admits to not always being the best of friends with her brother.

“We were total siblings growing up,” Losch said. “We were too close in age to get along well as kids, but now we enjoy each other’s company. We can laugh and have a good time with one another.”

Kus, a family community services alumnus, ran track for MSU during his years in East Lansing.

He said competing as a Spartan was one of the highlights of his college years.

“There were a lot of other schools I could have gone to for track and my education, but I had MSU (merchandise) on basically from birth,” Kus said.

“When you’re going to school and competing in athletics, your time is taken up a lot, so everything seems easier when you leave
school. You learn how to push yourself — especially when you’re tired — push yourself more.”

“He was a great high jumper in high school. He set the record at seven feet at Grand Ledge (High School), and even got the statewide title,” Jim Kus said. “The entire family is just so proud of his achievements and we hope that he has a chance to win the competition.”

Jeff Kus said it’s difficult to pinpoint a favorite memory from his college days because he experienced so many good ones in East Lansing.

“It sounds corny, but I come back to East Lansing and it smells like East Lansing. Everything’s a little bit sweeter and a little more crisp,” Jeff Kus said.

“I get goose bumps when I see a hall that I used to live in or see people wear green and white. It’s mostly the everyday things that I miss the most.”

Jeff Kus flew to Malibu, Calif., during the summer for the Bachelor of the Year photo shoot.

He said he had a choice to do the photo shoot in Malibu or New York City and chose California because he’d later be traveling to New York for NBC’s Today Show.

“I got to meet a lot of the West Coast (contestants), about 15 guys or so. We had a lot of time just waiting and got to throw the football around and go out on the town,” Jeff Kus said. “The place where we had the photo shoot was near this mansion on the beach next to where Neil Diamond lives.”

Losch said although a contest like Bachelor of the Year might be perceived as superficial, her brother deserves the title for reasons other than physical appearance.

“Most of the reasons people get voted in a contest like this are based on good looks, but the reason Jeff is nominated is because of inner beauty, as cliché as that sounds,” Losch said.

“It’s on the inside that counts and I think voting for someone who makes others feel better about themselves is important.”
