MSU celebrates campus opening

February 22, 2010

MSU’s College of Osteopathic Medicine celebrated the opening Monday of a new campus at Macomb Community College’s University Center in Clinton Township, said Kari Hortos, associate dean at the site.

The new facility opened to about 50 students at the start of the spring semester, Hortos said. Students were accepted into the school in June and attended classes at a temporary facility during the fall semester, she said.

The Macomb campus is part of expansion efforts by the MSU college. A new campus site at the Detroit Medical Center in downtown Detroit opened in June, Hortos said.

Hortos said about 50 students attend the Detroit school. About 200 students attend the College of Osteopathic Medicine in East Lansing, she said.

Students at each of the three campuses — Macomb, East Lansing and Detroit — interact through state-of-the- art technology, Hortos said.

“When (students) are in class, they’ll see on the screen ahead of them the PowerPoint presentation just as they would on campus in East Lansing,” she said.

“Also, the flat screen TV that shows the presenter — they can watch that as well and they can see the other campuses being involved. When students ask questions, the camera will switch to the campus speaking.”
