73 Spartans named Big Ten Academic Fall honorees

By Cash Kruth (Last updated: 12/01/09 8:38pm)

Seventy-three MSU student athletes were named to the Big Ten Fall Academic All-Confernece teams, the conference announced Tuesday, giving the Spartans the fourth-most honorees out the 11 Big Ten teams.

Ohio State (95 honorees), Indiana (93) and Northwestern (81) finished ahead of MSU.

To be eligible for Academic All-Big Ten selection, student-athletes must be letterwinners at least in their second academic year at their institution and carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or higher.

Out of the five Big Ten teams with seven fall sports, MSU finished third behind Ohio State and Indiana. Penn State (72) and Michigan (41) finished fourth and fifth in that category, respectively. U-M’s 41 honorees were 10th among the conference’s 11 teams.

Notable individual Spartans honored were Corey Block, a field hockey sophomore back and kinesiology major, who was one of eight Big Ten athletes to have a 4.0 grade point average, field hockey senior midfielder and hospitality business major Floor Rijpma, who earned unanimous Offensive Player of the Year accolades, and football senior wide receiver and human biology major Blair White, who already had been named Academic All-American.

With all of the recent bad news coming from the scandal involving some of our football players, at least we can step away for a minute and look at the broader picture. This story is evidence that MSU does recruit quality student-athletes and that is something we can all be proud of. GO STATE!

I am glad to see this story posted next to the one about the football team. The football team incident feels like a blow to the gut, but it’s important to acknowledge the STUDENT-athletes who are doing their jobs.
