E.L. police arrest 2 in connection with larceny spree

By Brittany Shammas (Last updated: 09/21/09 12:10am)

Two East Lansing residents with no university affiliation face felony charges stemming from their involvement in a series of campus and downtown East Lansing larcenies that occurred between Sept. 12 and Sept. 13, East Lansing police Detective Dan DeKorte said.

The suspects, a 20-year-old man and his 17-year-old brother, were identified and arrested by East Lansing police for stealing an estimated $1,000 worth of items from vehicles. The two could face up to five years in prison or a $10,000 fine, DeKorte said.

The 20-year-old man was arrested after he was chased and captured by a would-be victim, a 25-year old man believed to be visiting friends, at about 3:51 a.m. on Sept. 13 on the 600 block of M.A.C. Avenue.

DeKorte said he could not elaborate on the identity of the capturer or the suspects. Police interviews determined the 17-year-old brother also was involved in the larcenies, DeKorte said.

Police believe the two are responsible for six or seven thefts between Sept. 12 and Sept. 13. The stolen items, which were recovered by police and include construction items and electronics, are being held until victims come to claim them.

Victims of the larcenies who are missing property should contact DeKorte at (517) 319-6851.
