Clothing racks see color burst

By Krystle Wagner (Last updated: 06/10/09 10:01pm)

Pastel colors and earth tones are a thing of the past.

“I wear bright colors because they are optimistic and brighten up my day,” said marketing senior Kristine Whall.

While more clothing stores are coming out with the look-at-me colors, not everyone is ready to welcome it.

“I like the colors, but sometimes they’re inconvenient,” said health and humanities sophomore Tamara Harris-Brown. “I buy them because they’re cute, but then I try and buy the brights that aren’t as bright.”

When it comes to daily apparel, Harris-Brown said she tries to buy clothes that are more neutral rather than colors that make a person stand out in a crowd.

“I don’t think they’re practical because you can’t wear them every day,” Harris-Brown said. “You can mix up the black with different tops, or the gray with different tops. But with bright colors, you can’t do that much.”

Although some will call them a tool for those seeking attention, Whall said she hasn’t received a noticeable amount of extra looks when she wears bright colors.

“I don’t think bright colors attract more attention to me,” Whall said. “They draw the eye but beyond that it’s no big deal.”

Forever 21 sells a variety of brightly colored tops that range in price. One of the brighter and flashier tops is the Silk Ruffle Trim Top for $22.90. American Eagle Outfitters is another store that has these summer fashion tops. A cheaper place with plain V-Neck T-shirts is Wet Seal, where these shirts sell for $6.50 in addition to other brightly colored style tops.

While stores are supplying the clothes, media arts and technology junior Kelechi Edozie-Anyadiegwu said she prefers deeper colors.

“I just don’t think they look that good on me, they’re just too outlandish,” Edozie-Anyadiegwu said. “I’m not someone who likes to show off.”

Even though Edozie-Anyadiegwu isn’t a fan of the bright colors, she believes some people can and will pull them off.

“If you have that outgoing personality and everyone loves you, you’re definitely going to pull off bright colors because you’re someone people like to be around,” Edozie-Anyadiegwu said.
