MSU golfer performs well in first round of Masters
By Jacob Carpenter (Last updated: 04/09/09 10:59pm)MSU golfer Jack Newman fired an even-par 72 Thursday at the Masters tournament in Augusta, Ga., completing his opening round with four birdies in the final five holes.
Newman, the first MSU golfer to play in the Masters, finished tied for 39th, which puts him ahead of such notable names as Phil Mickelson, Sergio Garcia and Retief Goosen.
Newman’s late rally pushed him ahead of his playing partners, 1992 Masters champ Fred Couples and 2008 U.S. Open runner-up Rocco Mediate, who each shot 73.
Going into the second round, Newman is seven shots behind the leader, Chad Campbell. To make the two-day cut, Newman must finish in the top 44, plus ties, or within 10 strokes of the leader.
Newman tees off at 8:55 a.m. today for his second round.

04/10/09 7:52amI am really proud of Newman, shooting a 72 at Augusta is a very solid score indeed. I hope he makes the cut after his round today. Also, he had some nice national airtime yesterday and the announcers mentioned MSU a few times as well.
congrats
04/10/09 9:55amCongrats to Newman, way to represent MSU. 72 is a GREAT score especially for the first round. Way to prove that you do belong there and keep up the excellent work. People like “Rick” obviously have never played golf or are just miserable humans who could never accomplish something like Newman has and are bitter about it. Good luck on the rest of the tournament!
