As part of their yearly tradition, the African Students Union are organizing their annual gala this Saturday showcasing various aspects of the African culture, including dance, fashion and poetry.
The gala is organized as part of the Africa Week, which is dedicated to spreading awareness about African culture and about various topics and issues related to the continent through a series of events and lectures that would take place from Nov. 10 until Nov. 17.
For this year's Africa Week, the union collaborated with Project 60/50, the African Studies Center, African American and African Studies, Black Student Alliance, Black Graduate Student Association, Sankofa Graduate Association and the James Madison College Office of Diversity Programming.
Here is a list of events:
- Nov. 10: Africa Jeopardy Night, time and place to be determined.
- Nov. 11: #NewBlack: A Talkback on Race in 2014. The event will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in B119 Wells Hall.
- Nov. 12: "Half of a Yellow Sun" screening and a discussion on Africa's future. Screening and discussion will be in 114 Berkey Hall from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
- Nov. 13: "Africa Union's Africa" book launch, written by Professor Rita K. Edozie, director of African American and African Studies in the College of Arts and Letters. The event will take place in Room 303 of the International Center from 7 to 9 p.m.
- Nov. 14: Civil Rights Solidarities: African Americans and South African Blacks, which will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. The event venue is still to be determined.
- Nov. 15: African Gala Night 2014 from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at the Pasant Theatre in the Wharton Center.
- Nov. 16: Women's Leadership Conference: "Leading Against All Odds," time and place to be determined.
- Nov. 17: Cuba: An African Odyssey. The event will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. in Room 303 of the International Center.
