Nineteen-year-old Okemos resident, Connor McCowan, was denied bond in court on Tuesday after being accused of stabbing 23-year-old MSU student, Andrew Singler, to death. The bond was set at $100,000, according to McCowan’s attorney Chris Bergstrom.

“We were disappointed there was no bond, but you know, it’s in the judge’s discretion to make that decision,” Bergstrom said.

Ingham County Circuit Judge Clinton Canady III ordered him to remain in jail until his trial, stating he was a flight risk.

The incident took place on the night of Feb. 23, when Singler texted a series of profane messages to McCowan before he reportedly drove to Singler’s Meridian Township apartment and stabbed him to death, according to a previous story published in The State News.

Singler was dating McCowan’s sister at the time of his death and texted McCowan expletives such as “slut” and “queer” the night he was stabbed. Singler, who had been drunk and angry, was texting Shay McCowan, his girlfriend, accusing her of losing his keychain.

Shay McCowan texted her brother that Singler had broken her back and ribs, although she reportedly was never treated for injuries. She later told Connor McCowan that she was alright.

According to text messages and testimony, Connor McCowan drove to Singler’s apartment to confront him. It was then that a fight between McCowan and Singler ensued, with McCowan stabbing Singler with a hunting knife and fleeing the scene.
