Hockey team unveils new jerseys

Today, the MSU athletics department unveiled the new hockey jerseys for the 2012-13 season that head coach Tom Anastos announced a few months ago. The home white jerseys feature the Spartan head logo on the chest with another logo and numbers on the shoulders.

MSU elite thrower misses Olympic cut

When Beth Rohl walked into MSU track & field throwing coach John Newell’s office four years ago, he immediately had a feeling she could be a special athlete. After just one season of discus throwing at New Buffalo High, Rohl was in Newell’s office asking to walk-on to the track program. Four years later, the girl with the long arms, broad shoulders and untapped reservoir of potential has developed into one of the elite throwers in the nation. Last weekend, Rohl broke her own school record for the third consecutive meet at the U.S.

Face Time with Caroline Powers

One of the more under-the-radar Spartan athletes in 2011-12 was also one of the most successful. Junior golfer Caroline Powers has amassed an exemplary career in three years in East Lansing, even being called “one of the best athletes at Michigan State,” by her coach Stacy Slobodnik-Stoll.

Face Time with Brandon Eckerle

Although his name is firmly engraved in MSU baseball lore, former center fielder Brandon Eckerle opted to return to the classroom rather than fight his way through the ranks of a sport he lost a little bit of passion.

The MSU baseball team will have a new look in the infield in 2013, as it is tasked with replacing three players who started all 60 games this season.

Golfers honored by coaches

Two MSU women’s golfers were honored by the National Golf Coaches Association, or NGCA, this week for their performances in the 2012 season that helped the Spartans win their second consecutive Big Ten championship and earn a berth in the NCAA Championship. Junior Caroline Powers was chosen as an honorable mention All-American for the second time in two years.

Boss talks about NCAA Tournament, MLB Draft in meeting with media

As the MSU baseball team returns home after a quick exit from the NCAA Tournament, head coach Jake Boss Jr. is forced to look ahead. The Spartans were ousted from the Palo Alto Regional in Palo Alto, Calif. after a pair of weekend losses to Pepperdine and Fresno State, respectively. The NCAA Tournament berth was the first for the program since 1979, where the Spartans were eliminated on their home field in the Mideast Regional by Pepperdine and San Diego State.
