Taylor drive defeats All-Stars

It was an ending that could have been penned by Hollywood’s best writers. Magic night ends with 89-87 Spartan win

A packed Breslin Center got all it could ask for Friday night, as the Spartan basketball team pulled out a 89-87 victory over the Magic Johnson All-Stars.With three seconds left sophomore guard Marcus Taylor hit a double-clutch floater in the lane after scooting by ex-Spartan Johnson for the last points of the game.Johnson‘s half-court desperation attempt was right on-line, but fell inches short, sealing the Spartan win.Taylor survived a tough shooting night to finish with 19 points to lead all scorers.Johnson finished with 16 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists to record the triple-double.

Spartans clear out Falcons 4-0

After out-racing Bowling Green 6-3 on Thursday, No. 3 MSU looked more like last season’s defensive juggernaut in a 4-0 win over the Falcons at Munn Ice Arena on Friday.The Spartan defensemen came up big across the board and junior goaltender Ryan Miller was outstanding, making 30 saves for the shutout.Freshman left wing Kevin Estrada led the offensive charge with two goals, helping the Spartans (5-2-1 overall, 5-2-1 CCHA) complete a sweep of Bowling Green (1-5-2, 1-4-1).With the win, MSU extends its home unbeaten streak to 22 games (20-0-2) since Oct.

Trannon commits to Spartans

Flint Northern football and basketball standout Matt Trannon verbally committed to play for the Spartans in 2002 on Friday afternoon.The 6-foot-7 wide receiver/forward will accept a scholarship from MSU football head coach Bobby Williams and in-turn give MSU men’s basketball coach Tom Izzo a top 20 recruit with walk-on status.
