6 recruits sign letter of intent to play next fall

On the eve of National Signing Day, the MSU hockey coaching staff expanded its recruiting class by two players. Forward/defenseman Tyler Howells of Eden Prairie, Minn., and defenseman Chris Snavely of Lancaster, Pa., both inked National Letters of Intent with MSU on Wednesday - less than 24 hours after they verbally committed. Forward Tommy Goebel of Parma, Ohio, and goaltender Dominic Vicari of Clinton Township also signed Wednesday.

MSU men's basketball head coach Tom Izzo said on National Signing Day on Wednesday that even though he and his assistant coaches only had three open slots for scholarships, the Spartans' 2003-04 recruiting class has been a "treat recruiting season." "There is no question this is one of the best recruiting classes we've had," Izzo said.

Junior transfer redshirted for season, postseason in jeopardy

Junior outside hitter Sara Villwock, who has been sidelined with a foot injury since the end of September, will be given a medical redshirt for this season. MSU head coach Chuck Erbe said he thought long and hard about the decision, making it within the last week. "She's making good progress, but for her to be back in time to really play a substantiative role for our team - she's not going to be in any position to do that," Erbe said. "She's still not cleared to go full-bore and jump and be in practice.

With senior tailback Dawan Moss serving an indefinite suspension, the MSU football team was forced to call on the future of its running attack - and the call was answered. In the Spartans' 56-21 thrashing of Indiana, freshmen tailbacks David Richard and Jaren Hayes showcased their version of "thunder and lightning" as they combined for 224 yards and three touchdowns.

Bloomington, Ind. - After four straight blowout losses, the indefinite suspensions of two team captains and the firing of former head coach Bobby Williams, the MSU football team took out its frustrations on Indiana. The Spartans (4-6 overall, 2-4 Big Ten) played like everyone expected them to play all season, beating the Hoosiers (3-7, 1-5) 56-21 at Memorial Stadium on Saturday.

Columbus, Ohio - It wasn’t the prettiest of weekends, and for the MSU volleyball team, it was downright ugly. The Spartans dropped both of its matches this weekend, losing in three games to Indiana on Friday night, and then falling in four games to Ohio State on Saturday night. Going into the weekend, the Spartans were hoping to pick up a pair of wins escalating to the forefront of the conference.

As the Spartans rolled over the Indiana Hoosiers 56-21, junior wide receiver Charles Rogers returned to his early season form that shattered records and had many whispering Heisman. On Saturday, the 6-4, 205-pounder compiled 168 yards of total offense with two touchdowns on just seven touches.

Freshman left wing David Booth did his best to shake the rust out of the Spartans on Friday night, but 13th-ranked MSU still succumbed to heavy underdog Niagara, 2-1, at Munn Ice Arena.Booth scored 41 seconds into Friday’s game, but that was all MSU (4-3-0 overall, 3-1-0 CCHA) could muster for the entire night.
