Team looks to go undefeated at home

MSU field hockey is just 70 minutes away from an undefeated season at home, and Kent State is the final obstacle in the Spartans’ way.In its inaugural season at the MSU Field Hockey Complex, MSU (15-2 overall, 3-1 Big Ten) has successfully defended its turf, winning all nine games.But numbers aside, head coach Michele Madison said today is just another tough game.“We’ll definitely have to bring our ‘A’ game to the field,” Madison said.

Green and White set to tip off Saturday

The men’s basketball team will be kicking off its season this Saturday at 4 p.m. with the Green-White Game. The game will provide the last chance for fans to sign the “Elite Banner” before it’s raised to the Breslin Center rafters.

I don’t know about everyone else on campus, but for me watching the Spartans has become more painful than any final I’ve ever taken. I mean, seriously, I’d rather sit through an entire semester of nothing but calculus, biology and economics classes.

Marquette - It’s only two weeks into the season, but patterns are already emerging for the MSU hockey team - lose badly Friday night, watch the videotape of the loss early Saturday, make adjustments and then win the second game.Such was the case against Northern Michigan at the Berry Events Center during the weekend.

Team helps coach pick up 100th win

The No. 5 MSU field hockey team is continuing to pile on the wins, and head coach Michele Madison is reaching milestones as a result.Sunday’s 3-0 win over Ball State marked the squad’s 15th victory and also signaled Madison’s 100th victory on the Spartan sidelines.Just three games ago, Madison celebrated her 150th career coaching victory with a 5-1 win over Indiana.Sophomore back Judith van Haeringen said the game’s significance, coupled with the crowd of families and alumni in the stands, fired the team up.“It’s always fun to play in a game like this.” van Haeringen said.

Team goes unscathed

The women’s soccer team came out of the gate slowly, but the Spartans scored three goals in the second half to post a 4-0 victory over Detroit (4-7-4) on Sunday. “The biggest concern we had was that with this game being played in the middle of the Big Ten season, we didn’t come out flat,” MSU head coach Tom Saxton said.

SPORTS UPDATE: Gridders losing ways continue

The Spartans’ gridiron woes continued Saturday. MSU (3-4 overall, 1-2 Big Ten) was plagued by crucial penalties and allowed Minnesota (7-1, 3-1) 543 yards of total offense and 390 rushing yards in the 28-7 loss. It was the Spartans’ third defeat in their last four games and second straight in conference play. “We’re not a good football team right now,” MSU head coach Bobby Williams said.

SPORTS UPDATE: Icers redeem themselves with victory over Northern

Marquette - Senior defenseman Brad Fast carried the MSU hockey team to a 3-1 win over Northern Michigan at the Berry Events Center on Saturday.Fast scored MSU’s first two goals, including the game-winner with 8.3 seconds left in the third period.Sophomore goaltender Matt Migliaccio was solid in making 17 saves on 18 shots for MSU (2-2-0 overall, 1-1-0 CCHA) .But Fast, the team’s captain, proved to be MSU’s hero Saturday.

The Heisman race is starting to take form as the conference schedules separate the pretenders from the contenders. The season started with everyone thinking a quarterback would take home the hardware, but Marshall’s Byron Leftwich hasn’t been enough to keep the Thundering Herd in the national spotlight and Florida’s Rex Grossman has played himself and the once-mighty Gators out of just about everything. Only one signal caller remains, Iowa State’s Seneca Wallace, who nobody considered a candidate in the preseason. Joining Wallace in pulling away from the rest of the field is a pair of tailbacks, Ohio State’s Maurice Clarett and Miami’s Willis McGahee. Front-runners:Seneca Wallacesenior quarterback, Iowa StateFollowing a bye week that allowed his hype to cool, Wallace led the Cyclones to a 31-17 victory over Texas Tech. Iowa State entered the third quarter tied 3-3, but a 12-yard TD run by the senior signal caller ignited a 21 point third quarter for the Cyclones.

Women tee off in tourneyMSU women’s golf team ends its fall season at the 2002 Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championships this weekend at the Gettysvue Country Club in Knoxville, Tenn. Five of the 15 teams competing in the tournament are ranked in the Top 25 by Golfweek magazine.
