Goran Suton had no idea what to expect when he first came to MSU in the summer of 2004. Although the now-senior center on the MSU men’s basketball team had attended Lansing Everett during the previous four years, the native of Sarajevo, Bosnia-Herzegovina admitted he is still learning his way around the American lifestyle, let alone the college life.

Team focusing on itself going into tournament

As the MSU women’s basketball team prepares to face Wisconsin in the Big Ten Tournament today, it has the added bonus of getting an extra day off to watch the other teams play in the opening round. It’s a benefit of capturing the No. 2 seed on Sunday with a 57-55 win over Purdue.

Young Spartans hoping for fresh start

All year long, the MSU wrestling team trains for one particular moment of its season — the Big Ten Championships. So forget about MSU’s 6-10 overall record, its 1-7 conference record and the youthful inexperience of a team that could have five freshmen in its starting line this weekend. Anything can happen at the Big Ten Championships, and now it’s here.

Back atop the Big Ten

A long four years ended fittingly for the seniors on the MSU men’s basketball team, as their hard work on the court culminated in a regular season Big Ten Championship on Tuesday night. The Spartans clinched their first outright Big Ten title since 1999 with a 64-59 victory over Indiana at Assembly Hall.

Teams wrap up Big Ten championships

The MSU women’s track and field team finished sixth at the Big Ten Indoor Championships this weekend, while the men finished eighth. Freshman Beth Rohl claimed a title in the weight throw and freshman Becca Buchholtz won the high jump with a career-high 1.79 meter jump.

It’s taken Goran Suton five years to get a share of a Big Ten Championship. And while a share of the title is all well and good, excuse the senior center if he and his teammates want the whole thing for themselves.

Team fought back to earn No. 2 seed

With its 57-55 victory over Purdue on Sunday, the MSU women’s basketball team locked itself into the No. 2 seed in the Big Ten Tournament and gave itself a solid chance at getting into the NCAA Tournament to play as many as two more games at Breslin Center.

1st round will be competitive

The regular season has come to a close and it’s time for the most exciting part of the year to begin — the playoffs. The top four teams — Notre Dame, Michigan, Miami and Alaska — all earned first-round byes and will play in their home barn in the second round. Teams ranked five through eight all play the first round on home ice.
