Recruit Miller granted release
Onaje Miller has been released from a national letter of intent, which he signed in February with the MSU football team, Associate Athletics Director John Lewandowski confirmed Monday.

2011 Athletics Hall of Fame class named
On Thursday, Mateen Cleaves (men’s basketball), Morten Andersen (football), Dana Cooke (volleyball), Kisha (Kelley) Simpson (women’s basketball) and Charles McCaffree Jr. (swimming coach) were honored for their time in the Green and White as they were announced as the 2011 induction class of the MSU Athletics Hall of Fame.

In her final race as a Spartan, Emily MacLeod shattered the MSU track and field 5,000-meter run school record while clocking in a seventh-place finish at the NCAA Championships on Friday in Des Moines, Iowa.

Former Spartans Holm, Wunderlich selected in MLB Draft
In the 12th round of the 2011 MLB Draft on Tuesday, the Detroit Tigers selected former MSU first baseman Jeff Holm as the team’s 11th draft pick. Continuing to represent MSU, former pitcher Kurt Wunderlich was drafted in the 20th round by the Oakland Athletics.

Football lands Elite 11 quarterback
As Lima (Ohio) Central Catholic quarterback Tyler O’Connor became the fifth verbal commitment in MSU’s 2012 recruiting class, it appears the hole left by former Spartan Joe Boisture has been filled.

Pistons must pick a winner this time around
The time has come yet again for the Detroit Pistons to hire another head coach. After two lackluster seasons of leading a group of mismatched veteran players and misguided young talent, John Kuester was the latest to be fired in the Pistons’ semi-annual coaching carousel. Kuester finished with a record of 57-107 in his two seasons in Detroit and failed to make the postseason both years, the first time that has happened since the mid-90s.

Hansen honored for senior season
MSU softball senior shortstop Lindsey Hansen was named a 2011 Louisville Slugger/National Fastpitch Coaches Association, or NFCA, Division I All-American, the association announced Wednesday. For her outstanding final season performance for MSU, Hansen received a third-team at-large shortstop selection.

Illinois tops Spartans
The curtain has closed on a historic season for the MSU baseball team. As Illinois mobbed the pitcher’s mound in an act of triumph and exuberance Saturday at Huntington Park in Columbus, Ohio, the Spartans (36-21 overall, 17-11 Big Ten) were forced to stand aside quietly to watch their co-Big Ten champion celebrate.
