The road less traveled

Brandon Wood left a lasting impression on the MSU men’s basketball team two years before he ever put on his No. 30 Spartan jersey. Then a sophomore at Valparaiso, the 6-foot-2 combo guard played against MSU on Nov. 22, 2009 at Breslin Center. Despite the Crusaders walking away on the wrong end of a 90-60 final score, Wood stood out with his 24 points and 9-for-ten free throw shooting.

Rush named FWAA Freshman All-American

After recording 12 tackles for loss and four sacks this season, MSU defensive end Marcus Rush has been named a Freshman All-American by the Football Writers Association of America. Rush joins defensive tackle Jerel Worthy, who recently declared for the NFL Draft, and three other players — kicker Brett Swenson, linebacker Greg Jones and offensive guard Joel Foreman — as the five Spartans to be named FWAA All-Americans in the last six years.

Penn State defeats MSU wrestling team in weekend matchup

In its first look at competition in three weeks, the MSU wrestling team was routed by No. 4 Penn State 36-6 at the Kellogg Arena in Battle Creek, Mich. The only points of the day for the Spartans (2-3 overall, 0-2 Big Ten) came when Nittany Lion Nico Megaludis was disqualified for using an illegal move on senior 125-pounder Eric Olanowski, awarding six points to MSU.

Women's basketball holds off Penn State for road win

After capturing the first outright Big Ten title in program history a year ago, it wasn’t the MSU women’s basketball team, but Penn State, that was selected by the coaches and media to win this season’s conference title.
