Icers rebound to dominate Canadian team

The men’s ice hockey team had something to prove after being embarrassed in its first exhibition game, and Western Ontario was in the wrong place at the wrong time.Senior defenseman Jon Insana opened the scoring for MSU less than a minute into Friday’s contest and the Spartans never looked back, smoking the Mustangs 7-0 at Munn Ice Arena.In beating Western Ontario, the Spartans split their two exhibition games.

Muskegon gridder commits to U

Jason Randall, a 6-foot-6, 240-pound tight end from Muskegon, verbally committed to join the Spartan gridders next fall. Randall, who is best noted for his size and running speed, is a top 20 in-state recruit and should be a nice compliment to MSU’s team, said Bill Kurelic of the online recruiting service Rivals100.com.

The men’s ice hockey team will battle Western Ontario at 7:05 p.m. today at Munn Ice Arena. Coming off a 6-4 upset loss to the under-18 USA Development Team on Tuesday, head coach Ron Mason’s club looks to rebound against the Canadian university. “We wanted to skate against (the National Team),” Mason said, referring to playing a finesse-style game.

Mens soccer loses to Oakland 1-0

ROCHESTER - In a 1-0 loss to Oakland University Wednesday, the MSU men’s soccer team got a taste of international play without setting foot on Australian soil. Instead the Spartans (5-5) made their way across the state to Rochester to take on the Golden Grizzlies (6-3-1) - a team containing six European players.MSU head coach Joe Baum said Oakland recruits rather than settling for second rate in-state players.

Peterson signs with Raptors

Morris Peterson’s roots may be sunk in Michigan soil, but after signing a three-year contract for an undisclosed amount Monday with the Toronto Raptors, the former MSU basketball star can finally call Canada home.Peterson, the 21st pick in the first round of the 2000 NBA draft, signed for the maximum amount available for his pick, his agent Thad Foucher said.

One-hundred-thirty-two dollars may seem like a small fortune to some, but to history junior Kevin Selenich, it’s a tiny price to pay for Spartan basketball.With $132 in hand, Selenich went to the Student Alumni Foundation Monday night and for the second year, bought Izzone tickets; a package that includes courtside seating at all 14 home games, an Izzone T-shirt, membership to the foundation and several member benefits.“I’d pay twice as much for these tickets,” he said.

Icers face off at annual Green and White Game

Maybe the only team that can beat MSU goalie Ryan Miller is MSU.The sophomore surrendered three goals in the Green and White intrasquad hockey game Saturday night, which the White team won 4-2.Miller set school records for goals against average (1.53) and saves percentage (.932) last year while totaling eight shutouts.
