Izzo lashes out against 'U' student fan section

Tom Izzo loves the Izzone - 90 percent of the time. It's the other 10 percent that makes him question having the Spartans' cheering section. Late in the second half of MSU's 69-58 win over Minnesota on Saturday, the Izzone started chanting "UN-EM-PLOY-MENT" to Golden Gophers head coach Dan Monson, the main reason being Minnesota's 1-10 record in the conference. Izzo said he didn't hear it in the waning minutes of the game, but he was "ticked off" when he caught word of the chant. "If I would have heard that, it would have been worth a technical to walk over and smack somebody," Izzo said.

The MSU women's golf team brings back a victory to East Lansing after the 14.5-3.5 win over Northwestern in the Spartan/Wildcat Cup, held in Orlando, Fla., this weekend. The Spartans led with 948 after 36 holes to Northwestern's 972.

Two runners qualify for NCAA tournament

Individuals on both the men's and women's track and field teams qualified for the NCAA Championships during this weekend's meet at the 14th annual Iowa State Classic. Steve Sherer, the 2003 All-American, had a season-best time of 14:02.98 in the 5000-meter run.

Icers salvage split with Goldie's game-winner

The MSU hockey team spent the weekend trying to rally back after falling behind in both of its games against Alaska-Fairbanks. The Spartans were partly successful in doing so, settling for the split at Alaska - losing, 5-4, in overtime on Friday while winning, 3-2, on Saturday. MSU (18-15-1, 14-9-1 CCHA) found itself in a 4-2 hole at one point in the second period of the first game of the conference matchup.

Gymnasts set season highs at home meet

The MSU gymnastics team took first place at the 15th annual Spartan Invitational on Saturday with a final score of 195.725. The Spartans (7-9) had season-high records in both the team floor and team bars scores, finishing with 49.475 and 49.200, respectively. Sarah Alexander tied MSU's fourth-best event score with a season-high 9.95.

Offense absent in blowout loss

The No. 17 women's basketball team got blown out Sunday at Breslin Center by a very determined Ohio State squad. The Buckeyes (15-8 overall, 7-5 Big Ten) opened the game with a 13-0 run and never looked back en route to a 72-53 win over the Spartans (19-5, 9-4). Icers gear up for weekend series in Alaska

The Great White North. No, not Canada - Alaska. It's where the MSU hockey team has been since Wednesday, gearing up for its weekend series against Alaska Fairbanks starting today at 11:05 p.m. Adjusting to the time difference - Alaska is four hours behind - prompted MSU head coach Rick Comley to hit the road two days ago despite MSU holding a 10-2 advantage at Alaska. "Players are so tired when you get there - they want to sleep constantly during the day," Comley said. "It's what you do with the trip mentally.
