MSU loses ugly game against Notre Dame

South Bend, Ind. – Andrew Maxwell stepped on the field with a chance. Facing defeat at the hands of No. 22 Notre Dame, the senior quarterback opened the final drive of the game on MSU’s 33-yard line and an uphill battle to the end zone.

Sept. 22, 2007. That was the day it started for Nick Hill. On a visit to the campus of the University of Notre Dame, Hill took in a viewing of the 71st annual rivalry game between MSU and Notre Dame.

Final test for Spartans before Big Ten season

In the last weekend before Big Ten play commences, the No. 14 MSU volleyball team (8-1 overall) will host Eastern Michigan, Duquesne and Cincinnati at Jenison Field House at the Auto-Owners Insurance Spartan Invitational. It could be a big weekend for senior outside hitter Lauren Wicinski, who is 10 kills away from reaching the 2,000 kill career milestone.

WOMEN'S SOCCER

Women's soccer suffers first loss of season

After a rain delay just a few minutes into the MSU women’s soccer match against Nebraska, the Cornhuskers came out to secure a 1-0 win and hand MSU its first loss of the season. Nebraska freshman Jaycie Johnson gave the Cornhuskers (5-2-1 overall, 1-0 Big Ten) their first goal from 13 yards out in the 12th minute, which turned out to be the difference maker.

Kreutz's goal enough to top Bowling Green, 1-0

With a 1-0 win against Bowling Green on Wednesday evening, the MSU men’s soccer team is starting to get the ball rolling towards the meat of the season. The Spartans (4-1-0) have four shutouts on the season, and boast one of the staunchest defenses in the country.

Freshman stepping up big for volleyball

The volleyball team continues to rely on their nationally seventh-ranked freshman class, and the class continues to deliver. Though early injuries have forced head coach Cathy George to give freshman middle blocker Allyssah Fitterer and freshman middle blocker Autumn Christenson, who has played outside hitter thus far, larger roles than what was initially expected, the talented recruits have handled the grind of the season with grace.

Saturday's game could come down to trenches

Ever since a thrilling fake field goal named after a kids movie sealed an overtime victory for the Spartans in 2010, the MSU-Notre Dame rivalry has been defined on the offensive and defensive lines.

Spartans ready for Bowling Green

The next game is the biggest game of the year. That’s the new motto for the MSU men’s soccer team (3-1-0) heading into a showdown with Bowling Green (1-2-2) at 5 p.m. Wednesday evening at DeMartin Stadium.

Cross country picks up two Big Ten weekly honors

The recognition train for MSU athletes continues to roll. Following Big Ten honors handed to volleyball outside hitter Lauren Wicinski and soccer goalkeeper Zach Bennett, redshirt junior Leah O’Connor and redshirt sophomore Caleb Rhynard, both of the cross country team, have been distinguished as Big Ten Cross Country Athletes of the Week.
