Spartans triumph in final period of exhibition game

When the Spartans scored three unanswered goals in the first period, it seemed to be time for the Western Ontario Mustangs to start warming the bus. The Mustangs weren’t ready to call it a game yet though, as they exploded in the second period and scored three unanswered goals to tie the game.

Comley learns more about team during intrasquad scrimmage

During the MSU hockey team’s annual Green and White game, both teams got a little taste of victory. After two 25-minute periods, the White team prevailed 5-1, but the Green team won the practice shootout afterward. MSU head coach Rick Comley saw progress on both sides of the puck in the team’s first time playing a game together.

The State News caught up with MSU alumnus and Colorado Avalanche defenseman John-Michael Liles this week. Liles was a finalist for the Hobey Baker Award as a senior and the first two-time winner of the CCHA’s Best Offensive Defenseman Award.

Young icers face early challenges

There’s no hiding that the MSU hockey team is going to be young this season. But MSU head coach Rick Comley and associate head coach Brian Renfrew don’t think that’s necessarily a bad thing. Both coaches are excited to get out on the ice and start working with the large incoming freshman class.

Former Spartans icer shines with Penguins

The State News recently caught up with professional hockey player Adam Hall. The Pittsburgh Penguins forward and MSU alumnus saw his team fall to the Detroit Red Wings in the Stanley Cup finals last week in a matchup that ignited an internal conflict for the Kalamazoo native.
