Men's golf heads to Rhode Island

The men's golf team will be defending their title Sept. 28-30 in the 10th annual Adams Cup of Newport at the Newport National Golf Club in Rhode Island. Joining the Spartans and host Rhode Island this year will be Furman, Maryland, Marshall, Minnesota, Mississippi, Pepperdine, South Florida, Alabama-Birmingham, Xavier and Yale. The team finished seventh last week at the Inverness Intercollegiate tournament, shooting a three-round total of 907.

The MSU volleyball team isn't playing for individual accolades this season, but when someone is performing as well as senior setter Nikki Colson has been, those honors just happen.Colson, a three-year captain from Lincoln, Neb., not only was named Big Ten Player of the Week but also was named AVCA National Player of the Week after her MVP weekend in Washington, D.C., at the American Volleyball Classic.

Plummer, Bulger unlikely QB starts

Perennial superpro Marshall Faulk, the Rams running back, has a spot on the bench for several weeks as he nurses his knee and broken bones in his hand. Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb is nearing bust status if he doesn't return from his bye week to post big numbers in Week Four. Rams quarterback Kurt Warner is on the bench. Oakland quarterback Rich Gannon is playing like he should be on the bench. Redskins quarterback Patrick Ramsey has made 300-yard passing weeks a norm. Spartan fans won't even finish this

Hopefully the handful of Spartan fans that traveled to South Bend, Ind., for the Notre Dame game learned something. Perhaps they picked up on how to be a college football fan. For those of you not lucky enough to bask in the tradition of Touchdown Jesus this weekend, allow me to fill you in on how a college football fan should and shouldn't act: A college football fan doesn't leave with two minutes remaining in the game because he or she is bored. Real sports fans know homefield advantage exists.

Kopka excels for spikers

In her third year as a Spartan, junior outside hitter Michelle Kopka is finally settling in on the MSU volleyball team and in the United States. Still, she feels there is more work to be done. Kopka came to MSU via Scarborough, Ontario, and not only had to adjust to the new style of volleyball in the United States but also the new lifestyle. "When I came here initially, it was obviously a huge shock," Kopka said.
