Men's soccer doesn't receive NCAA Tournament bid

The MSU men's soccer team did not receive a phone call from the NCAA championship committee Monday for an invite to the NCAA championship.The Spartans (11-5-2) lost to Penn State during the first round of the Big Ten tournament last Thursday, 2-1.Indiana defeated Penn State to win the Big Ten Tournament Sunday in Bloomington, Ind.

Women's cross finishes 3rd; men finish 11th

At the NCAA Great Lakes Regionals hosted by Indiana State on Saturday, the MSU women's cross country team finished third out of 30 teams, and the men finished 11th out of 32. Senior Michelle Carson finished second overall in the women's 6K race at 20:26.

Blowout reminiscent of many 2002 games

Madison, Wis. - As far as blowouts go, MSU has seen plenty in the past two seasons. But this year was supposed to be different. With a new coach and a new attitude, the Spartans were supposedly beyond getting torn apart.

Lack of defense hurts 'U'

Madison, Wis. - Defense wins championships. But it also can lose them, as the MSU defense demonstrated by giving up 630 total yards to Wisconsin to remove itself from championship contention. The Badgers racked up the majority of their yards in the air (385), as quarterback Jim Sorgi directed an aerial assault to his favorite target, Lee Evans.

Despite loss, team has gone above expectations

On Saturday afternoon, around the time that Wisconsin wide receiver Lee Evans caught his third or fourth touchdown pass behind the MSU secondary, I wonder how many television sets made that beep-crackle-and-fade noise they make when snapped off. It would be even more interesting to know how many of those blackened TV screens were accompanied with a four-letter word.

Spikers' serving will dictate weekend play

It begins every match, every game, every point, yet, for the MSU volleyball team, serving seemed to be hurting them rather than helping them - until recently.The Spartans have become more consistent with where and how they are serving, and that is because they have been more aggressive. "Consistent serving helps make the blockers' and the defensive players' jobs easier," sophomore setter Mickey Davis said.

Spartans' fate rests on selection committee

It was dreary, overcast and chilly at the men's soccer team's final practice at Old College Field on Tuesday before the Spartans headed to Indiana to play some of the most important games of the year.As the light grew dim over the team's evening drills, they played all out- just as if it were the real thing.
