Softball ready to go Just months after closing out its 2002 campaign, the MSU softball team has begun fall practice for its 2003 season. Last season, the Spartans ended their run with a 1-0 loss to Michigan in the conference finale. The Spartans finished 24-35 overall. This season, the team returns a number of players, including junior first baseman Natalie Furrow, junior third baseman Brittney Green, senior outfielder Tiffany Wallace and senior outfielder Sandy Lewis.

Lugnuts lose, look to win game three

Battle Creek - In the race to the divisional playoffs, the Lugnuts are taking it down to the wire.Lansing (38-34 second half, 76-66 overall) lost 3-1 to the Michigan Battle Cats on Wednesday, and will need to win today’s game to stay alive in the Midwest League playoffs.“That‘s a pretty good team on the other side,” Lugnuts manager Julio Garcia said of Michigan.

Taking in a game can change your mind

Have you ever sat down and watched a volleyball match? More specifically, have you ever watched the MSU women’s volleyball team compete in a match? If not, all I can say is you’re missing out. After spending the majority of my weekend in Jenison Field House watching the Coca-Cola/MSU Volleyball Classic, I have a higher level of respect for volleyball and for the people who play it. Not that I never respected volleyball players, I’m a former high school baseball player and I spent most of my time in high school surrounded by jocks.

Rice quarterback proves his worth

In Division I-A college football, there isn’t a lot of room for a 5-foot-8, 175 pounder to be an impact player as a starting quarterback. But Rice head coach Ken Hatfield has made room for Kyle Herm. “You find that champions come in all sizes and shapes,” he said.

Club team jumps into season

What started out as a group of kids getting together just to have fun has grown into a major force among Big Ten club sports.The men’s water polo team will start its season with the 2002 Spartan Invitational, Friday through Sunday.

Fan club looks to grow

Slapshots, MSU hockey’s student cheering organization, will begin selling tickets for its expanded and relocated section tonight. The section, which is run by the Student Alumni Foundation, has upped its membership by 30 this year, bringing the total number of available Slapshots season tickets to 144.

Field Hockey The field hockey team split a pair of games in Norfolk, Va., during the weekend, falling to Old Dominion on Saturday, and defeating William & Mary on Sunday. On Saturday, MSU managed to force nine-time national champion Old Dominion into overtime before falling to the Monarchs 3-2.

Michigan, Washington contest highlights conference play

No. 10 Michigan vs. No. 9 Washington In a game that pits two tough top-25 teams against each other, the U-M-Washington matchup seems to be the main event this weekend. U-M, which was 12th in the nation in total defense last season according to ESPN.com, returns a tough defensive line, along with linebacker Victor Hobson, who has a shot at defensive player of the year honors.

Robersons fate decided by injury

Ypsilanti - If Eastern Michigan wide receiver Chris R. Roberson had things his way, during his senior season in high school, he would have had to make a decision whether to attend MSU or Illinois. But a week before his last year began at Harrison High School in Farmington Hills, he broke his ankle during a scrimmage - his aspirations to play Big Ten football were crushed. “When I got hurt, they really didn’t know, so they would still call,” Roberson said.

Like youngsters on Ritalin, Death Ro and McSkinny are ready for the 2002 college football season. The Spartans take the field Saturday against Eastern Michigan, and there’s a wretched stench blowing in from Ann Arbor, so that means it’s time for your favorite pigskin prognosticators to strap on the pads and put it through the uprights. We might not know what we’re talking about half the time, but we have no qualms about making complete fools of ourselves.
