Spartans impress 'Magic'

When Earvin "Magic" Johnson and Larry Bird met at center court Saturday, it was a meeting of the minds, 25 years after the two played in the 1979 national championship game.But this time, the two met as elder statesmen of the game, discussing everything from LeBron James to MSU's potential NBA prospects and the state of the NBA.While Bird didn't play in the game, he served as the Globetrotters honorary coach, watching the game from the end of the bench next to Johnson."We came in and changed the league," Johnson said.

WEB ONLY: 2 field hockey players net conference honors

After shutting out Ohio State last weekend, the MSU women's field hockey team continues to control the Big Ten, with two Spartans claiming Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week honors . Junior Annebet Beerman took Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week honors after tallying a hat trick and a defensive save for the Spartans.

Stars, stripes sting 'U'

While Earvin "Magic" Johnson and Larry Bird smiled from the start to finish of the Harlem Globetrotters 97-83 win over MSU, Tom Izzo wasn't amused. The Globetrotters, featuring Johnson along with Bird as the honorary head coach, didn't goof around with the Spartans.

Laskowski nets 3 goals in 2-win weekend

The MSU women's soccer team traveled to Colorado Springs, Colo., this weekend, finishing up its season with two wins before the Big Ten Tournament on Thursday. The Spartans defeated Colorado College, 2-1, on Friday and defeated New Mexico, 2-0, on Sunday. Senior midfielder Tiffany Laskowski scored the Spartans' two goals.

'Magic' statue erected at Breslin

The "Magic" is back in East Lansing - this time, forever. Earvin "Magic" Johnson, former MSU standout and 1979 national champion, unveiled a 12-foot, bronze-cast statue of his likeness Saturday morning in front of hundreds of fans gathered outside the Breslin Center. His trademark smile flashed for cameras outside, but a ceremony preceding the unveiling revealed the life-long Spartan shaking with emotion. "My whole life I wanted to be a Spartan," Johnson said.

Trailing was unfamiliar for Spartans

MSU was in need of a big play. In unfamiliar territory, trailing 27-13 with a little more than six minutes remaining, the Spartans knew they would have to score quickly. Icers Halloween treat: 2 victories

The MSU hockey team wants to be a winning team for Halloween.Only two wins will grant the Spartans that treat.That feat can happen this weekend, as the Spartans (3-3 overall, 2-2 CCHA) play a home-and-home series against Ferris State (2-4-0, 1-3-0). Friday's contest at Munn Ice Arena faces off at 8:05 p.m.

Spikers want to break 1-1 funk

The MSU volleyball team is where it always seems to be at this point of the season - in the middle of the pack.The Spartans are 5-5 in conference play, tied for sixth with Purdue, right about where they have been the past couple of seasons.
