MSU men's basketball team experiments with lineups in crucial win over Southern Indiana

After a tough opening night loss to James Madison, the Michigan State men’s basketball team found a way to win its first game of the season. Following the loss to JMU, head coach Tom Izzo admitted he was disappointed with some of the leaders in the starting lineup and could potentially look into some changes in the lineups in the games following.

Sometimes teams just have an off-night, and that seems to be precisely what happened to the Michigan State men’s basketball team during its 79-76 season opener loss against James Madison. The Spartans shot a combined 62.2% from the free throw and just 5.0% from the three.

Exhibition games are built to be a learning experience for everyone involved. Players, coaches, referees—everybody has something they can take out of the experience of an exhibition game. Michigan State men’s basketball’s high-intensity exhibition game against No. 9 Tennessee felt a little more like a late-March tournament battle than a game with no stakes. The game came down to the very last second when the Volunteers were able to pull ahead by one point for an 89-88 victory over the Spartans.
