Spartans following similar path as 2007 team

The 2007 MSU volleyball team went largely unnoticed throughout the regular season. Ignored by the coaches poll, the Spartans quietly accumulated a 19-13 regular season record (10-10 Big Ten), earning an NCAA Tournament berth behind the leadership of two senior outside hitters, Katie Johnson and Ashley Schatzle. Both girls racked up more than 500 kills that year while Schatzle earned All-American honors and Johnson was in the discussion.

This week, the Big Ten’s “Honoring Legends. Building Leaders.” tour will be in East Lansing from Thursday to Saturday for the No. 15 MSU football team’s game against Minnesota (noon, Big Ten Network).

Izzo pleased with unselfishness of team

Through the first weeks of practice, one thing really stands out to MSU men’s basketball head coach Tom Izzo: his team’s unselfishness. But that unselfishness comes at a strange time, when most of the players haven’t played together all that long, Izzo said. “The neat thing is we’ve had years where we’re selfish — the ball never moved,” Izzo said.

Women's cross country wins 2nd straight Big Ten title, ready to move on

They’ve done it again. One year after winning MSU’s first women’s cross country Big Ten title since 2001, the Spartans claimed their second straight conference championship Sunday in Urbana, Ill. Walt Drenth, director of MSU cross country and track and field, said the team was aiming to add another championship win to its résumé prior to this season. “As a group, they sat down together before the season started and talked about what they would like to accomplish,” Drenth said.

Clark earns weekly Big Ten honor

MSU men’s soccer team senior goalie Jeremy Clark was named Big Ten Defensive Co-Player of the Week by the conference. Ohio State goalie Matt Lampson shares the award with Clark. Clark made three saves in a 2-1 victory against Western Michigan on Wednesday in preparation for Sunday’s matchup with Michigan. The goalie made nine saves for the shutout against the Wolverines, including a five-shot flurry in the final five minutes of the game. Clark is second in the Big Ten with a .804 save percentage on the season.

Men's basketball opens exhibition season with 85-58 win

Trying to put last season’s struggles it, the MSU men’s basketball team took the floor Sunday for the first time since March, when the Spartans dropped a 78-76 heartbreaker to UCLA in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. During an 85-58 trouncing of the Ferris State Bulldogs in an exhibition at Breslin Center on Sunday, the Spartans were able to get a feel for their team and fans were treated to a preview of what to expect come Nov.

Hockey picks up first sweep since February

Just one night after witnessing linemate Greg Wolfe flash his fangs and strike fear into Robert Morris’ goaltending, Lee Reimer took his turn on Saturday night. The sophomore forward notched his first career hat trick and added two assists to power the MSU hockey team past RMU, 6-2, Saturday night.

Volleyball falls to Purdue in four sets

Despite a strong start, the No. 11 Purdue Boilermakers proved to be too much for the MSU volleyball team to handle Saturday evening as the Spartans fell, 3-1. With the loss, the Spartans (17-7 overall, 6-6 Big Ten) split their week’s games for the sixth straight time this season.

The MSU women’s cross country team claimed second straight conference title Sunday at the 2011 Big Ten Cross Country Championship hosted by Illinois in Urbana, Ill. The title is the women’s fourth overall. The women headed into the meet ranked 15th by the U.S.
