Spartans aim to finish season strong

As the first Big Ten team to be declared a division champion, MSU head football coach Mark Dantonio is not in the sharing kind of mood. Especially after last season’s co-Big Ten championship — which MSU shared with Ohio State and Wisconsin — Dantonio wants the Spartans to remain the out-right Legends Division Champions, vying to be the sole conference champion, and that requires the Spartans to defeat Northwestern on Saturday in Evanston, Ill. “We want to be in charge of this division,” Dantonio said at his weekly press conference Tuesday.

Anastos: MSU delivers 'mixed results' in split

Even as the No. 20 MSU hockey team has started to gather national recognition, head coach Tom Anastos knows his team is far from polished. The weekend split against Northern Michigan illuminated both his team’s triumphs in Friday’s 4-2 win and a lack of mental toughness that led to Saturday’s 2-1 loss on the road. With No.

The MSU wrestling team fell in its first dual meet of the season to Eastern Michigan on Friday, 20-16. Although the Spartans (0-1) lost the meet, five Spartan wrestlers were able to pick up a win. The Spartans will have a two-week break before traveling to Pennsylvania to take on Lock Haven and Bucknell on Dec.

Martin brings A-game on Senior Day

When senior wide receiver Keshawn Martin stepped out onto the field Saturday at Spartan Stadium, he was on a mission and not about to lose on Senior Day. Martin played like it was his last time with home-field advantage, finishing with eight receptions for 99 yards and one touchdown — while adding a rushing touchdown — toward No.

Men's basketball blows out Texas Southern in home opener

In MSU’s first two games this season, freshman guard Travis Trice had a lot of growing up to do. By the Spartans’ (1-2) third game and home-opener against Texas Southern, Trice made the most of his 20 minutes, impressed head coach Tom Izzo and added 11 points to MSU’s 76-41 victory over the Tigers (1-2) on Friday night at Breslin Center.

VOLLEYBALL

Volleyball upsets No. 7 Illinois

In what may prove to be one of the biggest wins of the season, the MSU volleyball team toppled No. 7 Illinois, 3-1, Friday at Jenison Field House. Led by the play of its three senior outside hitters, Michigan State (20-9 overall, 9-8 Big Ten) shocked the Fighting Illini and earned its first 20-win season since 2007. The victory is the second time that MSU has beaten the number seven team in the nation under head coach Cathy George, who is in her sixth year with the program.
