Memories of Little Giants play lingers

For Le’Veon Bell, it was the longest four seconds of his life. As the 2010 MSU football team lined up for a fake-field goal to beat Notre Dame in overtime, the play was designed for punter Aaron Bates to throw a pass to Bell, but the running back was taken to the ground and thought the game had been lost.

Students aim for free Izzone tickets in contest

When electrical engineering freshman Seth Purucker woke up Wednesday morning, he never thought he would be attending all of the MSU men’s basketball games for free this season. But as Izzone tickets went on sale just after midnight on Wednesday, Purucker was one of 20 students who received free tickets from the Student Alumni Foundation, or SAF, and the athletics department after making a half-court shot at the rock on Farm Lane on Wednesday morning.

Spartans use road trips as solid learning experiences

The MSU volleyball team heads to Charleston, S.C., this weekend to play in their final invitational prior to the start of Big Ten play. The Spartans already played on the road once this season in Storrs, Conn., but they’re hoping to use this weekend as a test run for what they’ll experience in conference play, head coach Cathy George said.

Column: Big Ten stage will test depth of Spartans

Most people feel comfortable belting out their favorite tune in the shower, but when it comes to singing in front of Simon Cowell, that’s a completely different story. In many ways, this season for the MSU women’s soccer team can be seen the same way. No disrespect to Bowling Green and Eastern Michigan, but the Big Ten is the Simon Cowell of the season.

FOOTBALL

Receivers stand out in weekend matchup

Flash forward a week and the offense has gone from stumbling to startling, with eight receivers totaling more than 14 yards receiving in the No. 10 MSU football team’s (2-0) 41-7 victory over Central Michigan (1-1).

Column: MSU appears confident with Big Ten play looming

The Spartans have opened the 2012 season with three consecutive invitational championships by winning the Spartan Showcase, University of Connecticut Classic and the Auto-Owners Insurance Spartan Invitational over the last three weekends. Junior outside hitter Lauren Wicinski now has garnered a pair of MVP trophies — sophomore libero Kori Moster took home the MVP from the Connecticut Classic — and no fewer than five Spartans have been named to an all-tournament team.

SPORTS

Spartans fall to Northeastern

A rough weekend for MSU field hockey concluded with a 3-1 loss to Northeastern on Sunday at Ralph Young Field at Old College Field. The Spartans were hoping to bounce back from their double-overtime loss to Virginia on Friday, but a second-half surge by the Huskies was enough to put the game away.

Arnett frustrated with playing time against CMU

It was the biggest play of DeAnthony Arnett’s young MSU career. The sophomore receiver’s 48-yard reception was a careerlong and set up an MSU touchdown on the Spartans’ opening drive of the second half against Central Michigan, but after the game Arnett hardly was thrilled. After playing less than a handful of plays in the Spartans’ season-opening victory against then-No. 24 Boise State, MSU receivers coach Terrence Samuel said Arnett likely would see an increase in playing time on Saturday.
