Spartans still confident going into weekend duals

Winning a close rivalry match and then getting dominated by the nation’s top team in the same weekend would be enough to drain the emotion of most teams. But despite coming off a loss to No. 1 Iowa in which no wrestler posted a victory, the MSU wrestling team (7-4-1 overall, 1-3 Big Ten) said it still is feeling confident entering this weekend’s duals against No. 11 Central Michigan and No. 25 Purdue.

Spartans need DeHaan to play well to succeed

It’s no secret: For the MSU women’s basketball team to be successful, senior center Allyssa DeHaan needs to be successful. This was no more evident than last Thursday’s game against Northwestern, where DeHaan dominated the Wildcats to the tune of 24 points, 10 rebounds and five blocks.

There was a time when Delvon Roe dreaded going to the free-throw line. Shooting 51-for-112 from the charity stripe last season — a measly 45 percent — the sophomore forward had a knack for converting and-one buckets but failing to capitalize on the 3-point opportunity.

The No. 22 MSU gymnastics team broke a two-meet skid and soared past No. 25 Ohio State, 194.875 to 191.425, Saturday at Jenison Field House as several gymnasts finished with season-best performances.

Former captain Walton back with Spartans as student assistant

Kalin Lucas’ signature drive to the basket just got a little tougher. At least in practice. Former MSU guard Travis Walson, last season’s Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year, has returned to East Lansing to complete three classes and receive his bachelor’s degree in family community services — also while joining the men’s basketball scout team.

It has a reputation as the “fiercest rivalry in college hockey.” That slogan is pretty accurate when describing the MSU vs. Michigan hockey rivalry. Whenever the two teams take the ice, valuable in-state bragging rights are on the line. And when the battle is held on a neutral site in a professional arena, the stakes are that much higher.
