Tuition raises rest on many shoulders

Tuition increases are a hassle both students and administrators detest. But as the MSU Board of Trustees has its upcoming decision on whether or not a tuition increase is necessary — and how much it will increase — the board must take all necessary steps to keep tuition low despite a lack of appropriate state funding, placing less of a financial burden on MSU students.

Paying for college nearly impossible

Over my past four years at MSU, try as I might, I have never been able to successfully pay for college on my own. When I say “pay for college,” I am referring not only to the rapidly rising cost of tuition, but also the added costs of food, clothing and shelter — not to mention the exorbitant price of textbooks.

Respect aids healthy resident relations

East Lansing residents and MSU students have been known to be at each other’s throats at times. But in more recent years, the relationship between students and the city has been strong, creating a positive atmosphere for residents and students alike. With the city virtually being split down the middle, 45,998 students to 48,579 residents, families and students have found a way to coexist, regardless of different lifestyles.

MSU takes advantage of new technologies

With the College of Education’s recent announcement of a new pilot program involving classroom iPads comes another reaffirmation of MSU’s dedication to technology, innovation and research. The Center for Teaching and Technology, or CTT, will purchase about 60 iPads for two 30-person courses each semester of the 2012-13 school year.

I am glad my writing inspires debate, even if it sometimes turns to ad hominem attacks, because writing that goes undisputed deserves neither to be read nor written.

EPA makes move to protect environment

Right now, power plants are allowed to dump unlimited amounts of dangerous industrial carbon pollution into our air. What can stop them? The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, or EPA, which has announced the first ever national limits on industrial carbon pollution from new power plants.

Women must fight for equality

I’ve never been much of an activist. As a journalism student, I’ve always been the person covering events and political rallies rather than participating in them. But as new laws that undermine women’s rights in the U.S. continually are enacted around the country, I’m feeling a lot more pressure to actively speak about these issues.

The end of the academic year

I often have been amused and mildly disturbed by the way The State News and MSU students close an academic year. On April 29, 2011, for instance, “A Year in Review” in The State News focused on the exhilarating football championship, disappointing basketball season and no classes due to snow.
