Andrew Singler Memorial Cup supports scholarship fund

More than two years after MSU student Andrew Singler was stabbed to death at his apartment by Okemos resident Connor McCowan, for which McCowan was sentenced to 20 to 60 years, the family plans to remember Singler’s life at the second annual Andrew Singler Memorial Cup in Ann Arbor.

Six-story apartment complex plans move forward

At their July 7 meeting, the East Lansing City Council approved site plans and special-use permits for a six-story mixed-use building on the corner of Grand River and Spartan avenues and a Lake Trust Credit Union on West Lake Lansing Road, near Meijer.

Call for Spartan Virtual Choir celebrates 100th anniversary of Fight Song

MSU is celebrating its fight song's 100th anniversary in 2015 by inviting those in the MSU community to send videos of themselves singing the song to create the first-ever Spartan Virtual Choir. A video published on July 1 asked viewers to record a video of themselves singing along to the song and upload the recording to www.msu.edu/fightsong.  MSU's fight song was composed by cheerleader and civil engineering major Francis Irving Lankey at Michigan Agricultural College in 1915 and most of the words were written by Lankey's friend and fellow MAC student Arthur L.

Abrams Planetarium to host show with animals Saturday

The Abrams Planetarium is bringing the constellations to life this weekend. At 2:30 p.m. on Saturday the planetarium is offering a free, special show called 'Star Safari' that pairs learning about the constellations with meeting their small animal counterparts brought from the Potter Park Zoo.

Joshua Davis replaces Meghan Trainor as Common Ground opening headliner

Meghan Trainor, scheduled as the opening headliner for Common Ground Music Festival on Tuesday July 7, will not perform due to continued treatment of hemorrhaging on her vocal chords. Joshua Davis (The Voice finalist and MSU alumnus) has been added to the lineup, which also includes Misterwives, Be a Miller, Skizzy Mars, Life of Dillion, and more.

MSU's gardens among best in the U.S.

MSU's W.J. Beal Botanical Garden and Hidden Lake Gardens have both been ranked by Best Colleges Online among the "50 Most Amazing University Botanical Gardens and Arboretums in the U.S." The rankings and ratings for each garden were assessed on a points system which awarded gardens for not only having a wide and manicured variety of plant species, but also for categories such as previous awards won, conservation and education, having a connected university degree program and 'Wow' factors. Fireworks in East Lansing under strict regulation over holiday weekend

Those looking to discharge fireworks this Fourth of July should be cognizant of East Lansing's fireworks ordinances, East Lansing police Lt. Steve Gonzalez said. According to East Lansing city ordinance, fireworks may only be discharged on the day before, day of and day after a national holiday. And even on those days, fireworks may not be discharged between the hours of 1 a.m. and 8 a.m. Violation of this ordinance may result in a $500 fine.

City of East Lansing closing offices for Independence Day

City of East Lansing offices will be closed on Friday, July 3, in observance of Independence Day.  The closures of the offices include: East Lansing City Hall, the East Lansing Department of Public Works (ELPL), the East Lansing 54-B District Court, The East Lansing Public Library, the East Lansing Hannah Community Center(ELHCC), East Lansing Prime time and the childcare program at the Bailey Community Center.  ELHCC and ELPL will be closed on Saturday, July 4 and Sunday, July 5 as well.  Refuse and recycling will be collected on Monday, July 6, instead of normal time on Friday.
