Habitat for humanity receives $80,000

Habitat for Humanity Lansing has received an $80,000 grant from the Federal Home Loan Bank of Indianapolis' Affordable Housing Program for aiding construction of homes in Greater Lansing. The grant money will go toward building materials and other expenses for eight Habitat Lansing homes, as well as helping to pave the way for three other homes not yet under construction. Habitat for Humanity Executive Director Denise Paquette said in a written statement that the funding will help to move 10 families out of substandard living conditions and into reasonably priced housing. In order to secure the grant money, Habitat for Humanity Lansing joined the National City Bank to apply to the Federal Home Loan Bank of Indianapolis.

Officials: Internet accounts secure, despite U-M hacker

MSU computer experts say students shouldn't worry about their school account being hacked into, despite an University of Michigan student recently being charged with hacking into student and faculty member accounts. U-M graduate student Ning Ma hacked into the accounts to obtain credit card numbers, final exams and send phony e-mails, some with the intent of receiving sexual favors from students.

Residents gather to prevent crime

The streets of Lansing neighborhoods were filled with residents and police officers on Tuesday evening as they gathered to join a nationwide effort to cut crime and make neighborhoods safer to live in.

Optical scan to replace voting methods by 2006

Lansing - Ingham County voters will have to adapt to a new voting system as early as 2004, Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land said Monday.Land outlined plans for a uniform voting system for Michigan, which currently employs five different methods at the polls.

Alex Amemone traveled thousands of miles from her Tucson, Ariz., home to MSU's campus just to win an argument.The 16-year-old is one of about 300 high schoolers who had to adjust to life in the dorms during the 13th annual Spartan Debate Institute."I finally learned how to do my own laundry," Amemone said.

'U' attend anti-terror fellowship

Fort Wayne, Ind. - Between "be safe" and "have a good trip," Laura McCoy had another special request for her son, biochemistry junior Andrew McCoy, as he took off for Israel. "Have an Israeli beer for me," she said as he walked through the security gates at Fort Wayne International Airport on Saturday. Andrew McCoy and international relations senior Daniel Grimm joined 48 other students from across the nation as part of two-week anti-terrorism fellowship in Tel Aviv, Israel.

Grower's Day will be hosted on Tuesday at MSU's Plant and Soil Sciences Building greenhouse. Visitors will learn about MSU's research involving bedding plants and perennials and go on a tour of the trial gardens.

Veterans gather to remember Korean War

Nearly 75 veterans gathered Wednesday night for a ceremony to remember the Korean War. Organized by the East Lansing Historical Society in the Hannah Center, 819 Abbott Road., the memorial was held to reflect on the 50th anniversary of the cease-fire signing, which ended the war.

ACLU contests Patriot Act

A provision of the USA Patriot Act is being challenged through a lawsuit filed by Detroit's branch of the American Civil Liberties Union and some Arab-American advocacy groups.The provision, section 215 of the anti-terrorism legislation, calls for librarians to hand over names and records of suspected terrorists to FBI agents.

Children play games, learn at space camp

As 10-year-old Chris McClain eagerly navigated the controls of his computer game at space camp on Wednesday, the furthest thing from his mind was that NASA could use his reactions to the game to recruit more scientists.McClain is one of 40 children at the MSU Space Pioneers Learning Adventures, a free two-week camp for fifth-and eighth-grade boys and girls interested in learning about space and science.
