Negative ads flood TV as Election Day nears

If there is something clogging the airwaves this fall, it could be the thick signal of negativity. MSU professors and students said they noticed a disproportionate amount of negative presidential TV advertisements during this election season.

Starting with a bang

For Garrett O’Sullivan, hanging out with 200 friends in lime Jell-O and soap suds was the perfect way to celebrate the start of a new school year. “I think that (Welcome Week) is slowly getting more intense,” said the physiology senior, who hosted a party Thursday at his house on Division Street. “There’s a certain amount of competition between parties, and people want to top it.”

The kegs are empty, the bottles are smashed and red cups are strewn about in yards. Typically, the messy remnants of a Welcome Week party would signal a successful endeavor. But couches in trees and kitchen furniture tossed in yards alludes to something bigger: Hundreds of dollars in violations and a bad image for East Lansing.

Members of Alpha Epsilon Pi still do not have a permanent place to live as the house they were hoping to inhabit, 1148 E. Grand River Ave., remains without a rental license.

Business booms with Welcome Week

In the midst of a struggling economy, Welcome Week provided a welcome boost in sales for several new businesses along East Grand River Avenue. Four businesses that opened since the close of spring classes saw a surge in clientele as MSU students settled in before the first week of classes, business owners said.

Making their mark

In MSU’s 153-year history, 115 Spartan athletes, coaches and officials have worn the green and white proudly before going on to wear the colors of their respective countries. MSU representatives have brought home 18 gold medals, 12 silver medals and eight bronze medals during the ultimate worldwide competitions, according to MSU Alumni Magazine.
