Jake’s steps became slightly smaller as he approached the top of the stairs. He tilted his head down the stairway toward Loïc Déjardin, an associate professor in MSU’s College of Veterinary Medicine. “He’s scared,” Déjardin said as he gently tugged on the strip of red fabric extending from Jake’s neck. “Come here, puppy.” One paw after another, the 11-year-old yellow Labrador retriever began his descent.

E.L.'s late-night eateries still reeling

More than a year after university officials mandated longer hours for residence hall cafeterias on campus, local business owners said they’re still feeling the effects of decreased late-night sales. Beginning in fall 2007, at least one cafeteria in every residence hall complex expanded its hours from 8 p.m.

Perles plans to make bid for Mich. governor

MSU Trustee George Perles said running a state is a lot like running a football team: It’s all about winning. “The same thing goes — win, win, win, win,” Perles said. Perles, a former MSU head football coach, is considering adding the role of governor to his résumé. In 2010, Perles said he’s serious about throwing his hat into the ring for Michigan’s gubernatorial race as the Democratic candidate.

Student organization hosts fry bread competition

On Saturday, seven people set out for the Nokomis Learning Center, 5153 Marsh Road, in Okemos, strapped on their aprons and competed for the title of best fry bread recipe. The North American Indigenous Students Organization, or NAISO, hosted the fry bread cook-off to advertise and raise money for its annual Pow-Wow of Love, scheduled for Feb. 21-22, 2009.

They were everywhere on campus. In the final weeks leading up to the election, avoiding somebody decked out in Barack Obama apparel was about as easy as finding an on-campus parking spot. Voter registration tables crowded the area by the Wells Hall bridge, forming a swarming blanket of politically active students that turned the grass underneath their feet brown just by standing there for so long.
